I’ll confine myself to books: reflexivity traps are springing all across literature. There are plenty of reasons to think about the trap and its offshoots, which include performative allyship and self-protective irony. To the extent that this discourages further action, oblivion might be preferable. As the cracks in our systems become increasingly visible, the reflexivity trap casts self-awareness as a finish line, not a starting point. Mocking your emotions, or expressing doubt or shame about them, doesn’t negate those emotions castigating yourself for hypocrisy, cowardice, or racism won’t necessarily make you less hypocritical, cowardly, or racist. The problem with such signalling is that it rarely resolves the anxieties that seem to prompt it. This is the implicit, and sometimes explicit, idea that professing awareness of a fault absolves you of that fault-that lip service equals resistance. These self-conscious times have furnished us with a new fallacy. Since its publication, the novel has won several awards and has been translated into sixteen languages. The novel was based on Anderson's personal experience of having been raped as a teenager and the trauma she faced. Additionally, Anderson employs intertextual symbolism in the narrative, incorporating fairy tale imagery, such as Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, and author Maya Angelou, to further represent Melinda's trauma. Melinda's story is written in a diary format, consisting of a nonlinear plot and jumpy narrative that mimics the trauma she experienced. Speak is considered a problem novel, or trauma novel. This expression slowly helps Melinda acknowledge what happened, face her problems, and recreate her identity. Unable to verbalize what happened, Melinda nearly stops speaking altogether, expressing her voice through the art she produces for Mr. Melinda is then ostracized by her peers because she will not say why she called the police. After Melinda is raped at an end of summer party, she calls the police, who break up the party. Then a shaggy-bearded suitor from the north comes to call-by far the oldest, ugliest, most revolting suitor of them all. But by wit, trickery, and luck, Catherine manages to send several would-be husbands packing. Her father is determined to marry her off to a rich man-any rich man, no matter how awful.
